Music Tuition

I currently teach piano and theory part time for Services for Education in Birmingham and have some availability for private students. I'm particularly interested to hear from people wishing for guidance in composition, music theory, harmony, counterpoint, arranging, and A Level courses, however I'm also able to teach piano, trumpet, cornet, tenor horn, and GCSE. I hold an enhanced DBS certificate and am able to tutor both online and in person. I'm based in Cradley Heath, West Midlands, UK.

I have been described as clear and able to give students confidence in their work.

Tom helped me stay stimulated and inspired in moments when I would run out of ideas, and created structure and direction in moments when I felt unsure with what to do.

He is great teacher. My kids really enjoyed his lessons! I highly recommend him.

Composition

Composition lessons comprise of me examining the student's work, discussing it with them (how they've written it, what decisions they've made, what they wish the music to do and be), as well as discussing any suggestions I have to further enhance the effectiveness of the music and their ideas. Lessons can also involve examining works by other composers, giving the student inspiration and knowledge, as well as learning about different compositional techniques, which can include ways of dealing with harmony, rhythm, texture, structure, and the development of ideas.

Instrumental (Piano, Trumpet and Other High Brass Instruments)

I believe learning an instrument should be fun and enjoyable, as it often has been for me. Whilst I set technical exercises to help students progress and give guidance on repertoire choice, I like students to decide and be passionate about which pieces they play. I also encourage them to play with ensembles.

Music Theory, including Harmony and Counterpoint

Music Theory is important to all classical musicians. It not only compliments their practical activities, it is essential in being able to read and understand the music they play. Topics covered will include clefs, time signatures (simple, compound, irregular, and irrational - e.g. 7/6 - for students who want a challenge), chords, keys, rhythms, and harmony. More advanced theory is heavily based in harmony and counterpoint. Students can learn to write chorales in the style of J.S. Bach, fugues, and study the ways in which many different composers have used harmony. I also have knowledge of jazz harmony and am able to discuss this with students if they wish. Contrary to popular belief, music theory isn't boring!
